Callendula Dream

Good morning with bright colours!

Yellow and orange Callendulas are everywhere in my garden as well inside the house. But they do not last long.

In my carden they don't even last long enough to grow, something eats them and it's not snails or slugs. Back before I started feeding birds I experimented by completely surrounding one or two plants with slug pellets, no gaps it was like a little blue wall, they still got eaten.

Now this is strange, the flowers are rather aromatic and I can“t imagine a pest that would eat it! You could try to place there some sticky paper to catch the culprit...I am really at a loss.

I bet it's beetles. I have a little tree that's been munched nearly bare. Twice I saw inconspicuous beetles eating it, but they flew away when I went to grab them.

Mam always blamed Woodlice, we have them by the bucket load.

I don't know what woodlice eat, but I think they're fairly slow, so if it was them, you'd have probably seen them.

Yes, this sounds very probable.

Too many slug pellets actually reduces their effectiveness - the smell can repel them.

I don't use them any more any way, too many birds call my garden home now. But with or without the wall of pellets the they still got eaten.

Good for you. I've given them up as well.

I'm starting to find other methods of slug control that seem to work on the allotment and don't involve slug pellets.

My lettuces are looking fine.

the birds are paying rent buy keeping my slugs down to an acceptable level and since I'm not a vegetable gardner that's fine by me.
