This first weekend of 2009 presented us with a breath of COLD!  The temperatures kept dropping to minus 11-12°C on Friday and Saturday night, 5-6°C during the day. Half of the wood in the cellar gone (in less then a week!). However we all are happy because the new windows really can keep the warmth in a way we didn´t see before.
Now the temperature is rising to only minus one (immediate info), it is windy and overcast and it looks like snowing. We´ll see!
I can feel a change of the pressure ( always) and I am cold though it is warm enough here. I decided to make soup - the boys will like it too, I suppose, for dinner. After this Christmas feasting, it will be a good change!
We call the soup "zelňačka" - made of cabbage. Actually not of "green" cabbage but of sauercraut. My, home-made one! I chop some root vegetables (carrot, celery, parsley) and a small onion and roast it on oil. In the meantime I boil about 1-1,5l water. Add the vegetable in, together with some rape-seed, salt and Masox (our best de-hydrated beef bouillon) and let boil. In the meantime I boil about 1litre of sauercraut shortly. I will use it without that water. And I chop some spiced saussages. As soon as the vegetable is all right, I add sauercraut and saussages and  sweet dried paprica. And boil shorty. I also add thickener. Sometimes we change paprika for sour cream and add chopped potatoes to the vegetables. It is NOT bortsch!!! It WARMS you  and it is low in calories.
I am quite warm now! :-)

That sounds good! We have some sauerkraut, but it's too hot now for soup. I'll save this to memories for another time.

You're not the only one. Almost everyone up there forgets the existence of half the planet. It's particularly bad at Christmas for some reason.

Well, of course not... Bortsch has beetroot in it. (Well, it does in England, anyway - that's the defining ingredient)

Do you make your own sauercraut? We don't see it very often over here.

Oh this soup sounds delicious and I love to make different soups! It's finally a bit cold here so perhaps I will try this over the weekend. Thank you for posting this. :-)
