BTW, it is only raining, the snow is melting like mad, the temperatures above zero. We could even see the sun for a moment and what a magic it does! The birds begin singing and wild ducks just wait for some free water on our pond. Soon the nights will be noisy but now I look forwart to hearing them. No way going out for a walk though, water is running in the rivulets everywhere and the remaining snow is heavy and prevents from walking. Still - I can SMELL SPRING!

on 2009-02-27 03:22 pm (UTC)This is from the Wikipedia, Linda, about V.Hollar.You can see his London BEFORE The Fire in the National Gallery.
The inscription is actually in German and written in Schwabach. It is probably not an exact translation but in English it might be:
That cat is good which doesn´t eat on the sly (this is a phrase right from my dictionary, I hope you can understand) and in Czech: Dobrá kočka, která nemlsá.
It was his own cat and you can see that the face is not perfect because the cat was real.
I printed the picture and framed it and have it in my room. http://www.ngprague.cz/en/1010/2082/clanek/press-release-wenceslaus-hollar-1607-8211-1677-and-europe-between-life-and-desolation/
This is even better than Wiki!!!!

on 2009-02-27 03:28 pm (UTC)One of the small gems of this period
is the famous etching “A good cat that
doesn’t steal titbits” (1646), probably
modelled on Hollar’s own domestic cat.

on 2009-02-27 11:29 pm (UTC)It's still summer here. I shall deny any possibility of autumn till April when it will start to get colder, March is still very hot so I count it as summer.
